Obituary for Gloria G. Montoya July 25, 1930 -- March 8, 2026

Gloria Montoya of Cundiyo, passed away peacefully in Los Alamos on Sunday March 8, 2026. Born to Elizario and Estefanita (Martinez) Garcia, she was the fourth eldest sibling in a large and loving family.

Her interest in the medical field and her heart for service led her to train as an x-ray technician at St. Vincent Hospital and later in life as a hospice volunteer and a medical assistant for Dr. Charles Riley. She was generous with her time and talents in many community and church activities.

Following marriage to Joe Montoya in 1950, they settled in San Pedro to raise their family. Family life included camping adventures, visits to national and state parks, zoos, museums, and always, a nearby fish hatchery. Later in life, she and Joe traveled to Europe, making lasting friendships along the way.

In 1976 they moved into the home they’d built in Cundiyo where they made it a place of peace, joy, and happy memories for family, friends, neighbors and the occasional stranger-lost and stranded where GPS never goes.

Above all else, the cornerstones of her life were faith and family. She was happiest being with the people she loved. She trusted in God’s will for her y La Misericordia de Dios. As she put it in her final days “It’s been a good run”.

Gloria was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Joe, son Joe M. parents Elizario & Estefanita Garcia, in-laws Jose E. & Celestina Montoya, siblings Guadalupe, Laura, Norma Jean, JR (Eva), & Ramon Garcia, Susie (Secundino) Quintana, Flora (Ross) Martinez, Pita (Joe) Sanchez, and sister-in-law Dorothy Garcia.

Survived by children-Joyce Markusfeld, Paul (Priscilla) Montoya, & Consuelo Montoya (Sam Loftin). Grandchildren-Daniel, & Francisca (George Vigil) Montoya, Joe (Staci) Markusfeld, Teresa (Stan) Gregory. Great-grandchildren-Georgia & Thomas Vigil, Alexis & Alana Markusfeld, Ben & Luke Gregory. Siblings-Annabelle (Ron) Brazeal, Robert (Lucy), Joe (Debbie), & Ben (Charlotte) Garcia, sister-in-law Marvine Garcia, and many beloved nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends.
