Gilbert “Beto” Atencio was called to be with Our Lord on September 11, 2018.  He is survived by his wife, who he married on May 18th 1962 to Susie Atencio: son, Richard Atencio (Yvette) of La Mesilla; daughter, Eileen Medina (Sammy) of Carlsbad, NM; daughter Sandra (Matthew) of Roswell, NM; Grandchildren: Estelle Atencio (Frankie), Jermaine Montoya (Marcos), Aaron Medina (Felicia), Isaiah Medina (Miquella) , Jesse Medina, Matthew Jr Rael, Abrem Atencio, Aajah Rael and Tenysha Rael; 16 great-grandchildren and several other relatives and friends.   After serving in the U.S Army, Beto worked for a few years Mining in Grants, he also worked for Madera Builders for many years before establishing Beto’s Septic Tank Service in 2002.  He had several competitors but, Beto never felt he was in competition with any of them.  He was well liked and considered them friends.  He will always be remembered for his loving smile and his incredible generosity. Beto was loved by many of his customers who considered him polite and professional.  Beto loved fishing, camping and tending to his garden.  He also loved playing music on his keyboard and guitar.  Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 11:00 a.m. at New Creations Church, 514 E. Riverside Drive with interment to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Serving the family as pallbearers are Aaron Medina, Isaiah Medina, Jesse Medina, Matthew Rael Jr., Abrem Atencio, and Frankie Cerezo. The family of Gilbert “Beto” Atencio has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477
