GILBERT SERRANO, 79, a resident of Española and formerly of Cañones, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2017. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Salomon and Teofila Serrano; brother, Dillon Velasquez Sr., sisters, Viola Clegg, Nida Serrano; brother-in-law, Jesus Monroy. His love of life and caring disposition was beyond measure. He was that person that would help anyone and everyone he came across and was most definitely loved by everyone and touched the lives of many with his great sense of humor. As a young man he loved drag racing and won many awards. Alongside with his sons they participated at many of the drag races around the Southwest area.  He was an amazing father to his 3 children. He was very much a part of each of their lives. He loved attending numerous softball games, baseball games, hunting and even babysitting! At a young age he moved his family to Denver and began his career as a machinist then moved on to a concrete finisher & foreman, after that he became a very well known & respected mechanic. He was a true McGyver! He could fix anything! Gilbert moved back to NM in 1973 and moved to Grants and worked in the Uranium mines as a Miller then on to the drilling rigs as a heavy mechanic eventually he moved to Española until his final departure. He is resting with the Lord our God, Mother, father and sisters in the Kingdom of heaven. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.  He is survived by his sons, Mel Serrano and wife MaryJane, Andrew Serrano, daughter, Liza Serrano; brothers, Steven Serrano and fiancé Linda, Antonio Serrano and wife Cathy, Albert Serrano and wife Thelma, Paul Serrano and wife Patsy, sisters, Clorinda Monroy, Dora Gwinnup and husband Leonard; grandsons, Andres Serrano and companion, Suzanna, Brandon Serrano and companion Kimberly, Roderick Lopez, granddaughters, Andrea and husband Joel Eugarrio, Adriana Serrano, Briana Serrano and companion Lucas. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiu, with a rosary to be recited at 5:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. also at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiu. Burial to follow at the San Miguel Catholic Cemetery in Cañones with the following serving the family as pallbearers, Walter Cordova, Brandon, Andres, Delbert Serrano, Dillon and Bengie Velasquez. Honorary pallbearers named, Edwin, Brianna, Adriana, Victor, Frankie and Delvin Serrano, Robert Vigil, Andrea, Joel Eugarrio, Antoine Jenkins-Serrano, Noel Vialpando. The family of Gilbert Serrano has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
