Eva Jean Herrera, 70, of Hernandez, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Chama, New Mexico, she spent her childhood traveling the world with her family as an “Air Force brat”, before meeting the love of her life in high school and settling down in Hernandez New Mexico to raise her family. Eva was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, and aunt whose kindness touched everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Ray; her sister, Deborah Graham; her father‑in‑law, Lorenzo Herrera; and her sister‑in‑law, Lorie Herrera.
Eva retired from Espanola Public Schools, where she was cherished by countless students at Hernandez Elementary and at the Espanola Middle School. Her warmth and compassion left a lasting impact on the community.
She is survived by her husband of fifty‑one years, Michael Herrera; son Jeremy (Stephanie) Herrera; daughter Amy Herrera; granddaughters Haley Martinez, Alyssa Herrera, Hannah Martinez, Leah Herrera, and Bella Herrera; sister Yvonne (Tom) Baros; brothers Russel and Stanley (Karen) Ray; mother‑in‑law Socorro Herrera; brothers‑in‑law Ivan Herrera and Mario (Berna) Herrera; numerous nieces and nephews as well as her beloved caretaker Lulu.
Serving the family as Pallbearers are Mario Herrera Jr., Samuel Herrera, Etienne Vermeulen, Jason Baros, Anthony Baros, and Alex Baros.
Eva’s legacy of love, strength, and generosity will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A Public Visitation will take place on Monday February 16, 2026, at 5:00pm, in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home and a Rosary to follow at 6:00pm. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday February 17, 2026, at 10:30 mass at San Jose Catholic Church in Hernandez NM, Burial will follow at the San Jose Cemetery in Hernandez.
