Eugene Martinez , 84, was born in Canjilon, New Mexico on March 27, 1936 and a resident of Espanola passed away peacefully on Friday, January 15, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father Zacarias Martinez, mother Agnes Schott; brother, Gonzalo Martinez, sister, Neille Purcell; granddaughter Sheri Martinez; father and mother-in-law, Lauriano and Sofia Olguin. Eugene served in the US Navy and learned his trade as a plumber that he worked for many years before his retirement. His favorite past times were arts and crafts, fishing and visiting all the casinos.  Eugene is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Martinez; sons, Eugene Martinez and wife Diana, Johnny Martinez and wife Eva, daughter, Margaret Martinez; granddaughters, Stephanie Martinez (Jason), Alyson Martinez (Marty), Shana Varela, great-grandson, Cruz Rey DeVargas, Miles, Chace and Mila Varela and his beloved dog Oliver; brothers-in-law, Joe Purcell, Leo Olguin and wife Earleen, sisters-in-law, Sylvia Martinez, Longina Martinez, Julia Maez, Livia Olguin; nephew, Toby and Mary Romero. Public visitation will begin on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with rosary to follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh, and a Mass of Christian burial to follow at 11:15 a.m. Burial will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021 at 11:15 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving the family as pallbearers, Stephanie Martinez, Alyson Martinez, Jason DeVargas, Marty Herrera, Jose Garcia, and Andrew Alire. Honorary pallbearers named are his great grandchildren. The family of Eugene  Martinez has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.
