In Loving Memory of our beautiful mom,
Dorothy Ruth Bernal
Beloved Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother
With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who passed peacefully at her home on August 8, 2026, at the age of 84, with her family by her side. She suffered a lengthy illness from dementia. She was a devoted and loving mother, cherished family member, loyal friend, and a source of comfort, strength, and love to all who knew her.
Born on August 24, 1941, in Petaca, New Mexico, to Navor and Amalia Gurule. She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She loved planting flowers and keeping her garden filled with beauty. She felt alive when she was outside enjoying God’s creation. She was a wonderful cook and passed down her love of cooking to her children. Throughout her life, she shared kindness generously, loved unconditionally, and created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and faith. Her greatest joy was her family, and she took pride in every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and loved ones. She is gone from our arms but held forever in our hearts.
Those who knew her will remember her warm and kind nature. She had a very witty sense of humor; she touched countless lives and left memories that will be treasured forever. She held our hands for a while, but our hearts forever. She is at peace waiting for the return of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Sonny” Bernal; mother, Amalia Gurule; father, Navor Gurule; sister, Ninfa Gallegos; brother, Phelipe Gurule; and sister, Manuelita Jaramillo.
She is survived by her son Edward Bernal, daughter Doris Pecos ( Joseph, deceased), Son Joseph Bernal ( Virginia), Daughter Josie Chavez ( Phillip), Daughter Gwenda Ortega ( Alex, deceased), & Son Robert Bernal Jr. (Melody).
Grandchildren: Daryl, Nico, Leah (Tony), Ariel, Joey (Janette), Brianna (Manny), Alyssa, Richard (Alyssa), Sean, Justin (Wilmer), Maria, Jacob (Andrea), Andrew, Alex, Gabriella, Isaiah, Lilliana, James, Troy (Sergio), Jordan and Kaitlyn.
Great-Grandchildren: Joe Paul, Angelina, Antonio, Aubrey, Abby, Rafael, Aviana, Xander, Carson, Malaya, Alexzandria, Azaleia, Laylah, and Logan.
Siblings: Cordy, Rose (Paco), Priscilla (Floyd), Timmy ( Naomi), Tony (Velma), Nerio ( Alice), Johnny (Monica)
A service to honor and Celebrate her Life, along with her husband Robert “Sonny” Bernal, will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Advent Life Church (62 A Van Nu Po Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87508). Family and friends are invited to gather, remember, and give thanks for the love they gave so freely.
Though they will be deeply missed, their love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know them both.
The family of Dorothy Bernal has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the beautiful Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477
