Doniciano Herrera, age 67, passed away unexpectedly on February 24, 2026, at his home in Española, New Mexico. He was born on December 7, 1958, in Chamita, New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose M. and Rosalina Herrera; his brother, Johnny Herrera; his son, Donald Gurule; and Eva Ortega, whom he lovingly raised and cherished as his own.
Doniciano was a devoted father, brother, grandfather, godfather, and friend to many.
He is survived by his son, Jesse Herrera; his daughters, Desiree Herrera and Ashley Herrera; and his grandchildren: Darrin, Anissa, Lilah Herrera, Alexis Gallegos, Rodney Gallegos, Jamal Lucero, and Serenity Espinosa. He is also survived by Malaka, the son of the late Eva Ortega. In addition, he leaves behind his loving companion, MaryAnn, and his precious, loyal puppy his “baby” who was always by his side. He is further survived by his siblings: Alfred (Evelyn) Herrera, Dorothy (Manuel) Sanchez, Martin (Natalie Garcia) Herrera, and Isidoro “Lolo” Atencio, along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Doniciano graduated from Española Valley High School in 1976. He honorably served in the New Mexico Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Transportation Specialist and Security Inspector. His recent employment was with the City of Espanola. Doniciano will be remembered for his strength, wisdom, and compassion. He touched countless lives and leaves behind a lasting legacy of love.
He was a prankster at heart and loved fishing, being outdoors, and enjoying family barbeques. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren and cherished spending time with his nieces and nephews. He loved watching football especially his Washington team, baseball and many other sports. He enjoyed hearing stories about how life was going for those he loved and celebrating their accomplishments. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Rosary will be recited on Monday, March 23, 2026, at 10:00 am, with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 am at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Santa Cruz, NM.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Doniciano’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his many nephews and nieces. Thank you to all involved in preparing for his final services. Thank you to DeVargas Funeral Home for their professional and caring service.
