Dolores Hayes , 85, died peacefully on April 8, 2019. A lifelong resident of the Espanola Valley she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Hayes Jr. (Bobby) and daughters, Sandy Hayes and Deborah Hayes-Sanchez. She is survived by Robert Hayes, her husband of 67 years. Children, Art Hayes of Gunnison, CO., Ricardo Sanchez of Alcalde, Rebecca Smith of San Pedro, Tim and Robyn Hayes of Carlsbad, and Jan Maestas of La Mesilla. Grandchildren, Anthony and Donna Maestas of La Mesilla, Abby Smith and Todd Sanchez of Santa Fe, Elizabeth and Chris Kearns of Ft. Worth, Jacob Smith of Espanola, Thomas Maestas of La Mesilla and Amelia Hayes of Carlsbad. Great grandchildren, Dionicka and Anthony Jr. of La Mesilla. Dear friends and caregivers Bea Jimenez of Santa Cruz and Becky Lovato of Hernandez. Plus many other friends and relatives. Dolores was dedicated to her family and took great pride in all of them. She loved her home. She taught many elementary students Catechism at Holy Cross Church. She was a talented seamstress and made many beautiful clothes for others at no charge. All her life, while she was able, Dolores visited and cared for the homebound. She had a strong faith in Jesus, the Virgin Mary and God the Father. Dolores was a member of the Society of the Holy Family and was a very active member of Holy Cross Church until her own health issues prevented her full participation. Later in life she developed Parkinson’s disease and retinopathy due to diabetes. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, The American Diabetes Association or your favorite charity in her honor. Dolores’ family sends many thanks to our friends and staff at Aspen Ridge Lodge and Sombrillo Nursing and Rehab of Los Alamos for their kind care, Espanola Hospital doctors and staff, DeVargas Funeral Home and all our friends and relatives for their thoughts and prayers. A memorial mass will be served for Dolores on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Santa Cruz, NM. Holy Rosary recitation before the mass. The family of Dolores Hayes has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
