Delfinio J Valdez passed away peacefully at age 83 on November 5, 2022. Born in Coyote, NM on January 22, 1939, Del is preceded in death by wife Consuelo, parents Merejildo and Emilia, siblings Avenilde Lopez (Jose), Pedro, Vidal (Polly), Josephine Martinez (Raymond), Sergen Martinez (Eustavio-Gus). He is survived by sons Thomas (Gena), Miguel, and Andres (Anamaria Medina); grandchildren Teresa, Elisa, Anisa, Thomas, Amoriah and Andres; brother Ferminio (Julia); and Sister-In-Law Teresina.

Faith was vital to Del’s life. During retirement, he was devoted to the Blessed Sacrament at Sacred Heart, his childhood parish.

Del was a dedicated educator, coach, and referee. He coached basketball, cross country, track and baseball over 6 decades at Coronado, Cuba, Santa Cruz and Espanola, NM, contributing to the futures of his students and players. Del was known for opening the gym for students to play basketball before the first bell. He enjoyed spending time with relatives, students, and friends, developing many strong relationships in Espanola through sports. He dearly appreciated hearing about their successes.

Del is remembered fondly for his post-game locker room speeches emphasizing Religion, Family, Education, Sports, and “Clean” Fun (in that order). He will always be remembered in his community as a beloved coach, teacher, mentor, and friend.

A public visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday November 13, 2022, in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a Rosary to follow at 5:30.  A second rosary will be on Monday November 14, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. and a Mass of Christian burial to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Cruz de la Canada and burial to follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery in El Llano.
