Daysi Lopez

Daysi Lopez, age 75, of Española, returned to The Heavenly Father’s House on October 2, 2023.  She passed away peacefully at her assisted living facility in Santa Fe.

She now joins her parents Benjamin Guillen & Marcolfa Salcedo, and her late husband Norbert Lopez of Santa Cruz in eternal rest.  She was blessed with two sons, Ben and Claudio, six grandchildren, with one great-grandchild on the way.   

Daysi was a young student from the village of El Jicaro, Nicaragua pursuing a master’s degree and embarking on her teaching career when she met Norbert at the University of Panama.  They later settled in Española while starting their new family.  Daysi formed memorable bonds with each of the children from Norbert’s first marriage.  She ran numerous charity missions to Nicaragua in the 1980s, delivering much needed goods to her childhood community; there Daysi rejoiced while visiting with her treasured parents, siblings and many nieces & nephews.  She was a most loving mother and grandmother who diligently applied her skills as a great educator and catechist.  Her tenderness towards her family knew no bounds.

A faithful daughter of The Church, Daysi was well known throughout the Española Valley and surrounding areas for her dedication to Catholic ministries and charity work.  She was a tireless champion of the unborn, and an esteemed leader of the Rosary Cenacles ministry devoted to raising awareness of Our Lady of Fatima’s messages.  Together with her many cherished friends, Daysi also helped to spread the Divine Mercy devotion across local parishes.  She was most often encountered in town while ‘on the go’ delivering Holy Communion to hospital patients, caring for a sick friend, or perseveringly pursuing our dear parish priests to plan for Our Lady’s next feast day.  She would fondly recount her bliss as an usher for the clergy while standing near St. John Paul II at World Youth Day 1993 in Denver.  Members of the community regularly enjoyed cheerful visits with Daysi at her home, often bringing their prayer requests for loved ones in need.

A rosary for Daysi will be held at DeVargas Funeral Home In Espanola, NM, on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at 6:00 pm.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Cross Church on Monday, October 9, 2023, at 9:0 0am, followed by burial service at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 11:00 am.
