David Lloyd Smith

d. July 15, 2025

Los Alamos

David L. Smith, born on July 21, 1950, passed away at his home in the early morning of July 15, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family, he received loving care in his final days. His wife, Leni, was supported by the entire family, with his beloved nephew Miguel Velasquez from Santa Fe among the first to assist.

David served the town of Los Alamos through his HVAC business, Sierra Enterprises, where he specialized in installing heating and cooling systems. His reputation for quality work was so strong that customers were often willing to wait months just to have him handle their projects. Known for his winning smile and mellow personality, David took the time to explain everything intelligently and with patience to his clients. Many have expressed how very special he was!

He was born to Lloyd and Joyce Smith (both now deceased) of Houston, TX. David often joked that he was born in Shreveport, LA only because his parents were working out of town. He met Leni in 1968 while they were in high school, after his father took a position at LANL. They even attended homecoming together! Leni was allowed to date him because he wanted to study the Bible with her—and her dad liked that!

In addition to his dedication to work, David and Leni found great joy in worshipping alongside their cherished friends at the Los Alamos Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, often hosting lively Big Band parties for the whole congregation. Their daughter, Elaina, who was a student in Italy started David and Leni’s love for traveling through Europe. Often taking family and friends on these memorable trips. Just last year, he learned to golf in Scotland with his “precious son,” Ken Leibee, who gave him lessons on a cold, stormy day—while the girls waited, freezing, in the golf cart!

In his sudden passing, David leaves behind his beloved wife of 35 years, Leni; his beautiful daughters Taylor (spouse Robert) and Chelsea (spouse Stephen) all of Albuquerque. He is also survived by Leni’s children: Ken Leibee (Spouse Jenni, who was favored by David) of North Carolina; Felicia of Albuquerque; Elaina of Venice, CA; and Amanda of Los Alamos. He also had 14 adorable grandchildren.

A family gathering to honor his life was held at home on David’s beautiful patio—a place where he spent many of his final hours. But we shall see him again! As promised at John 5:28,29.

A most sincere thank you from Leni to all who helped her in the last courageous week of his life. Special thanks to the Los Alamos Visiting Nurses—Liz, Brenda, and Leah—for the comfort and compassion they offered to David and the entire family. Sincere appreciation also goes to DeVargas Funeral Home for their kindness and the utmost respect they showed in caring for our beloved David and helping us through our grief.

The family of David Smith has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the beautiful Espanola Valley.  505-747-7477
