Clarice Amies

d. September 17, 2015

Clarice Cole Amies, age 88, died on Thursday, September 17, 2015, after a long struggle with multiple health complications and associated chronic pain.  Born October 7, 1927 in Rochester, New York, Clarice was preceded in death by her parents, Frances Evelyn Youmans Cole and Mason Cole, and her sisters, Lois Hale, Shirley Truex, and Kathleen Broman.

Clarice graduated from Monroe High School (Rochester, New York) in 1945, and went on to work at Western Union.   She was married to Eugene Smith in 1947 in Rochester, New York, and they had one son, Gregory, in 1949.  Clarice and Eugene divorced in1953.

In 1956, Clarice met and fell in love with Charles David Amies, and they married in November 1956.  Charles had two sons from his first marriage, Charles Patrick and Richard Allen Amies.  Clarice and Charles brought up Charles, Richard, and Gregory together, and had a lovely daughter together, Evelyn, in February 1958.

Clarice’s husband, Charles, was a career Air Force man.  They lived at many Air Force Bases over Charles’ career, and enjoyed seeing different areas of the United States and Europe during Charles’ years in the Air Force.  Charles retired in 1968 from the Air Force while stationed at Ent Air Force base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Amies family then moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico, where Charles went to work for the Los Alamos Scientific Lab (now the Los Alamos National Lab).  They had many happy years at their home in Los Alamos.  They went on many trips to see family in Rochester, Hawaii, Colorado, California, and Washington, and enjoyed their life in New Mexico.

Clarice was a kind and loving wife, mother, and homemaker, with a spirited and lively personality.  She was an avid flower gardener, amazing cookie baker, and enjoyed her family.  She is survived by Charles, her husband of 59 years, their children: Gregory (spouse – Deborah Newberg), Charles (spouse – Linda), Richard (spouse deceased – Rhonda), and Evelyn (spouse – David Swiss), six grandchildren, and her sister Muriel, and brothers Robert and John Cole.  She will be greatly missed by her family and all who loved her.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful and loving home-care team from Coming Home Connection and AmberCare Hospice for their kindness and gentle care of Clarice in these last two years. The family of Clarice Cole Amies has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
