Clara G. Stone, 97, died peacefully on May 13, 2017. She was born April 29, 1920 at home in Santa Clara Pueblo to Vidal and Josefita Gutierrez. Clara worked as a nurses aide during World War II in Los Alamos, NM. At this time, she met and married the love of her life Army Sergent, Thomas Preston Stone. They continued to live in Los Alamos until after the war. She was very proud to have served her country. When they moved back to Santa Clara Pueblo, she worked for many years and retired at the old Santa Clara Clinic with the Indian Health Service. She devoted her time to raising her family and making her traditional Santa Clara Pueblo black pottery. She sold her pottery from her home where she and her husband befriended many people near and far, making lifelong friendships. Being a devout Catholic and practicing her Native American culture, were very important aspects of her life. She enjoyed visiting with people and chatting about all the happenings in the pueblo. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings, her husband, Thomas Preston Stone, step-son, Charles Stone and daughter, Josephine (Cita) Stone Gallegos. Clara is survived by her daughter, Bernadette Sanders and husband Bart; son, Benjamin Stone; grandchildren, Casey Stone-Romero and husband Jason, Darla Garcia, Aria Sanders, Sara Cordova and husband Max, and Tsay Stone; great grandchildren, Jaylene Martinez, Isaiah Baca, Tiger Romero, Jada Dimas, Marcus Cordova, and Lana Cordova; daughter-in-laws, Susan Peterson and Cyndi Catanach; very close niece, Irene Garcia; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 7:00 a.m. at the Santa Clara Pueblo Catholic Church, with a burial to follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. Serving as pallbearers; Robert Montoya Jr., Nana Kay Montoya, Tsay Stone, Vidal Gonzales, Isaiah Baca, and Tiger Romero. The family of Clara G. Stone has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
