Carmen Teofila Naranjo

While surrounded by her loving family, Carmen Naranjo, age 91, was called to enter the Kingdom of God on January 22, 2023. Originally from Abiquiu, NM, she resided and raised her children in Santa Cruz, NM and together with Pete Naranjo, owned and operated the Valley Superette grocery and liquor store. Carmen was a very beautiful and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.  She had a selfless nature and dedicated all her love, time and energy to her family. She loved gardening and surrounding her home with roses and beautiful flowers. 

She was preceded in death by her father and mother Pablo and Anita Gonzales, husband Pete Naranjo, daughters Theresa and Monica Naranjo, brothers Paul (wife Rose) Gonzales, Reyes and Armando Gonzales, and sisters Jose Burkhardt (husband Walt), Helen Cowell (husband Ray), Mary Sandoval (husband Ernest), and Patricia Lucero (husband Benny).

She is survived by her children Bernadette Montoya, John Naranjo(and Ruth), and Elizabeth Pena (husband Christopher), grandchildren Richard (Aryssa) and Allen Montoya (wife Ana), Kandice Martinez (husband Josh), John Naranjo (Daniela), Michael, Christopher, Theresa, and Chantelle Naranjo, Shevonne and Leah Pena (son Miles), and Vanessa Reyes (husband Benigno), and many great grandchildren whom she adored. 

A public visitation will be held at DeVargas Funeral Home on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at 2:00 pm followed by a rosary at 3:00 pm.  A funeral mass will be held on Monday, February 6, 2023.  at Holy Cross Catholic Church at 11:00 am, burial to follow at 2:00 pm at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. 

Pallbearers are Ricky and Allen Montoya, John, Michael and Christopher Naranjo, Josh Martinez, Joe Trujillo, and Benigno Reyes. Honorary pallbearers Carlos Sandoval and Fabian Pacheco. 

The family would like to recognize and thank Dr. Ahmad, Dr. Mills and Hospice staff, and the Espanola Fire Department and Ambulance staff.
