Obituary

Betty Joan Essington

Betty Joan Essington, known to family and friends as Joan or JoJo, passed away on September 30, 2026, in Los Alamos, New Mexico, at the age of 90.

Joan was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, one of several children of Alfred and Lucinda “Lou” Dacus. She graduated from Bonita High School in La Verne, California, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen during her senior year.

After high school, Joan met and married Edward H. Essington, who preceded her in death. Together, Joan and Edward made their home throughout the West, living in California, Nevada, and New Mexico. Joan devoted many years to raising their two children, Michael Essington and Laura Draelos (Timothy). After her children left for college, Joan began working outside the home and eventually retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Joan was an avid gardener and took great pride in everything she cared for. She maintained a beautiful rose garden and was especially known for her immaculate lawn, where she happily spent countless hours watering, mowing, and making sure every detail was just right. She brought that same attention to her vehicles and was an enthusiastic car detailer, always keeping them spotless.

After moving to New Mexico, Joan developed a deep appreciation for Native American art and jewelry. Over the years, she collected Native American jewelry, pottery, and Kachina dolls from the pueblos of New Mexico, filling her home with pieces she treasured.

Joan is survived by her son, Dr. Michael Essington, and daughter, Laura Draelos (Timothy); six granddaughters, Meghan, Erin, and Nina, daughters of Michael, and Callie, Jennifer, and Lara, daughters of Laura; and many great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Lotter of Hemet, California.

A private graveside service will be held in Los Alamos.

The family of Betty Joan Essington has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley 505-747-7477.
