Bertha Montoya

Bertha Montoya, 93, a resident of Cuyamungue, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 26, 2022. Bertha was born on November 18, 1929, in Torreon, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry Montoya, parents; Abdon Castillo and Adelaida Castillo; brothers, Placido and Cipriano. She is survived by her children Henry Montoya (Maxine), Moises Montoya, daughter Cathy Borrego (John); grandchildren Nicodemas Montoya (Monica), Carl Montoya (Yvette), Jason Borrego (Robbin) and Johnathan Borrego (Lauren), greatgrandchildren; Sean Paul, Joshua, Nathaniel Montoya, and August Borrego. Brothers and sisters; Jerry Castillo (Esther), Corrine Sanchez, Ted Castillo, Rita Martinez, Rose Anaya, Severina Sanchez, Jenny Vargas (Ernest), Wilfred Castillo (Sylvia), Willie Castillo (RoseMary), Eddie Castillo (Maggie) and Guadalupe Castillo and numerous nephews and nieces.

Bertha graduated from Estancia High School in 1949 and shortly went to work at the Los Alamos Hospital in the Medical Records Department. She met her husband and raised her family in Cuyamungue. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed cooking, sewing, baking, canning, gardening, taking care of the farm. Her faith was strong and served the Catholic Church devotedly.

A Rosary will be recited on December 16, 2022, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Pojoaque at 9:00 a.m. and a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. The Burial will take place at the Pojoaque Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers; Jason Borrego, Johnathan Borrego, Nicodemas Montoya, Carl Montoya, Ted Castillo, and Mark Castillo.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at Sombrillo Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Los Alamos, NM and Amber Care Hospice in Espanola, NM for the outstanding care they showed Bertha for the last year. Many thanks to the different caregivers that took care of her.
