Bernie was born in Embudo, NM on June 9, 1952. She was raised in Llano, NM along with her 10 siblings. She often spoke of her memories in Llano as a magical place. At the age of 16 she fell in love and married at 17, a marriage that lasted 52 years. She moved to Las Trampas, NM with her husband, Frank, together they built their family home. In those 52 years they shared an amazing adventurous life. They worked construction together, attended sporting events and many vacations. Although, cruises were her favorite! She would always come home planning the next. They raised five children and later followed with 11 grandchildren. The day she became a mother she blossomed and found her calling as a homemaker. She was very protective over her children and grandchildren, right or wrong, she stood right in front of them like a Lion protecting her Cub. She would say “you love your children… but the love for your grandchildren is like no other”. Her family was her everything and referred to them as her “handpicked flower garden from God”. She would glow for her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. She never boasted about her accomplishments. Their accomplishments were what made her happy. Although, Mom always took great pride in her work. She physically worked harder than most men, carried the loving household, worked as a substitute teacher at the Penasco Schools where she was known as” Mamma Bernie”, planted and maintained a gorgeous flower garden, doing it all without skipping a beat or complaining. She was never too busy to lend a hand or an ear to those who needed her.
