Anthony "Tony" Trujillo

February 1962 – September 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our brother, Anthony "Tony" Trujillo, who passed away on September 6, 2025, at the age of 63.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Patrocinio Trujillo and Frances Fresquez, his sisters, Lorenza Martinez, Diana Fresquez and Sally Chavez.

He is survived by his brother Joseph Fresquez; sisters Clara Talavera (Sabino), Nadine Aragon (Searfin) and Jeanette Gray (Michael); and his cousin Gloria Babbitt from Denver, who he cherished as a sister, along with numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Sandy who stood by his side until the very end.

Born and raised in Española, Tony’s childhood was filled with the laughter and adventure of long summer days spent at the old outdoor swimming pool on the West Side. He was known as a remarkable diver, fearless and graceful.

After graduating from Espanola Valley High School in 1980, Tony answered a different call to service and joined the United States Army. He was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas, and later stationed in Hawaii, where he served his country with honor and pride. Upon his return to New Mexico, Tony continued his journey by attending Vogue Cosmetology School in Santa Fe. He earned his license and went on to work in shops in Española, Los Alamos and Santa Fe, where his friendly nature and skilled hands quickly made him a favorite with clients and colleagues alike.

He served as a Hotshot for numerous years. Hotshots are highly trained, specialized wildland fire handcrews that perform some of the most demanding and hazardous tasks in wildland firefighting. He was very proud to serve with many different Hotshot crews, dedicating himself to the work of keeping our forests safe in New Mexico and many other states as needed.

Tony’s love of music ran deep and true. A gifted drummer, he could be found behind his kit, weaving complex rhythms into the tapestry of local jams. He often played with local musicians, never missing an opportunity to add his unique beat to the soundtrack of his community. To Tony, music was not simply a passion—it was a way to connect, to celebrate, and to bring people together.

To his surprise he became a painter in his 30’s. His work resembled Monet, and he shared his art with family and friends.

He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched, from family and friends to fellow musicians and clients. Tony’s spirit—joyful, creative, and ever welcoming—lives on in the music he made, the friendships he forged, and the community he cherished.

Services will be announced once finalized.
