Anselmo R. Varela

He is proceeded in death by his parents Patricio Varela and Celia Varela, and siblings Rudy Barela, Raymond Varela, and Patsy Lucero.

Anselmo aka Chemo was born on January 24^th, 1956. He was a loving and generous husband, father, grandpa/great grandpa, uncle, brother, son and friend. He served in the Army for 2 years and the reserves for 4yrs. He then started his career at the State Penitentiary of Rawlins, Wyoming. He worked there for 8 yrs and then transferred to Santa Fe, New Mexico State Penitentiary and worked there for 14 yrs. He retired and shortly after started working at La Tierra Nueva in Santa Fe, New Mexico for over 20+ yrs. He enjoyed the community he worked for and there is nothing he wouldn’t do for his work family. He was married for 40+yrs and always looked forward to coming home to a home cooked meal. He loved his tortillas, beans and chile winnies but never turned down a good steak. He liked to take a weekend cruise with his wife, stop for a nice lunch/dinner and have his occasional margarita, make a detour to the casino for some gambling before they made their rounds back home.  When he wasn’t cruising with his wife, he was riding his motorcycles and hanging out with his biker family. He was always telling stories, having a good laugh and making others laugh. There was nothing that he wouldn’t do for his family and friends. He will be will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife Geri Varela, daughters Michelle “Mickey” Varela (Marcos), and Monica Guinn (Scott). Grandchildren Joshua Garcia (Amber), Ryan Marquez (Virginia), Isaiah Garcia-Varela, Tiffany Marquez (Michael), Taylyn Guinn, Devin Guinn and great grandson Gabriel Marquez. Brothers & Sisters Patricio Varela Jr. (Rita), Thelma  Varela, Elizabeth Quintana (Gene),  Jimmy Varela (Juanita), Roseanne Vigil (Gilbert) and Bobby Varela. Numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A Celebration of life will be celebrated on Friday November 4, 2022 at 6:00 pm in the Sangre De Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday November 05, 2022 at 10:00 am at New Hope Family Worship Center in Espanola, NM with burial at a later date at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM.
