Chimayo

Angelina “Angie” Martinez born August 28, 1933, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, passed away peacefully at her home in Chimayo, NM, on December 6, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Angie was a lifelong resident of Chimayo, NM. She attended elementary school in Chimayo, NM, and graduated in the class of 1951 from Santa Cruz High School in Santa Cruz, NM. In 1956, she married the love of her life, her husband, Joe Soliz Martinez of Cordova, NM, and together they shared 69 years of marriage. They built a beautiful life together and raised their five children in Chimayo, the community she cherished so deeply. Angie was known for her angelic presence, unwavering faith, and boundless love for her family and friends. Sweet, kind, and wonderfully witty, she carried herself with a gentle demure, and modest grace that made everyone feel comforted and welcomed in her presence.

She had a remarkable gift for connecting with people—Angie genuinely loved everyone she encountered, and they, in turn, felt that love instantly. Making new friends, sharing stories, and spreading joy were second nature to her. She often taught her children and grandchildren through gentle storytelling, offering lessons about God, kindness, compassion, and how to treat others with love. Her wisdom showed up in the simplest moments, and those lessons continue to guide her family today.

A devout Catholic, Angie was a member of Holy Family Church in Chimayo, where her faith shaped every part of her life. As a member of the Sagrada Familia, she attended mass in her Sunday best and everyone at church knew where she liked to sit as she sat in the same seat every Sunday for as long as she went to Mass - this seat was always reserved just for her.

Angie was a loving housewife and stay at home mother. After she raised her five children, she began employment in the hospitality industry. She worked 15 years at the Casa Escondida Bed & Breakfast, in Chimayo, NM. She also spent time working at Fort Marcy and various resorts throughout Northern New Mexico. Her work ethic and warm spirit carried through in her many years working in hospitality. No matter where she worked, Angie was cherished for her kindness, calm presence, and genuine care for others.

Angie is preceded in death by her mother, Senaida Trujillo; father and mother-in-law Demetrio and Eufracia Martinez; her brothers Alfredo, Jacobo, and Meres Trujillo; her sisters Rosenda Lopez and Elizaida Quintina; her beloved children Joe Jr. “Mother Nature” Martinez, Sandra “Vennie” Valdez, & Nel Martinez; and her beloved granddaughter Shayna Valdez.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Soliz Martinez Sr.; her daughters Darla Vigil (Kevin) and Sadie Chavez; sister, Bersabé Cole; sisters-in-law Diolinda Martinez and Fedelina Montalvo; her grandchildren Candyce Valencia (Conrad), Joshua Vigil (Amanda), Andrea Martinez (Andrew), Nic Martinez (Alex), Desiree Ochoa (Josiah), Timothy Vigil (Miranda), Lucas Gomez (Kristina), Maryssa Chavez (Adrian), and Isaiah Chavez. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Cedryc & Ceryne Valencia, Nyree Padilla, EzMae Martinez, Danielle, Liam & Hailey Vigil, Taya, Ezra & Isla Ochoa, Tessa & Madison Vigil, Deon, Desean, Aubrianna & Andrew Martinez Jr, and Ariyah & Asher Gomez.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Espanola Presbyterian Hospital. A special thank you is given to Angie’s Hospice Nurse, Barbara Tubb, RN, and Nurse Aide, Angelo Aragon, both of Red Willow Hospice, for their exceptional care and compassion during Angie’s final days.
