ANDRES “ANDY” AVELINO SALAZAR, 92, a lifelong resident of El Llano, born December 7, 1921 and passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at his home following a long illness with his family by his side. Mr. Salazar was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio David Salazar and Romanita Varela Salazar; son, Alex Salazar; grandson, Lawrence Salazar; brothers, Natividad, Ismael, Eloy, Salomon, Raphael, Willie, Leopoldo and Octaviano Salazar; sisters, Juanita, Lucia and Ignacita Salazar, Refugito Espinoza and Luisita and Romie Martinez; parents-in-law, Jose Maria and Juanita Coriz and sisters-in-law, Dulcinea and Carmelita Martinez. Mr. Salazar was a lifelong resident, born and lived all his life in El Llano. He worked numerous jobs throughout his life. He worked at Ghost Ranch in its infancy, shipyards in Oakland, California during WWII as a pipefitter and last of all, at the New Mexico Highway Department for 26 years where he retired in 1982. Known for all his dichos, chistes and his famous quotes such as, “Don’t rush me”, “Don’t be sorry, be careful” and, “If your gonna drink, drink to get drunk”. He was a farmer where he and his family farmed land in El Llano to supplement food at the dinner table. He enjoyed riding his horses, drinking his Budweiser, Mariachi music and watching boxing matches. He was an avid Denver Bronco fan. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to many who knew him. A big thank you to all the people of Ambercare who were very caring to our father and our family during his illness. Special thanks to Sylvia, Nancy, Janice, Melody, Ricardo and Joey for always being there for us when we needed them. Mr. Salazar is survived by his wife of 67 years, Grace Coriz Salazar; son, Sammy Salazar and wife Shirley; daughters, Teresita (Terry) Valdez and husband Michael, Rosemary Rivera, Romanita Salazar and Patricia (Patsy) Salazar Lewis all of El Llano; grandchildren, Henrietta Valdez and companion David Montoya, Mike Valdez, Jr. and companion Crystal Garcia, Valerie Martinez and husband Frankie, Alejandro Mascareñas, Lorenza Romero, Tracy Salazar and companion Leonard Archuleta, Ramona Moore and Jesse and Alexus Lewis; great-grandchildren, Tim and John Martinez, Santana, Mario and Mateo Valdez, Kaiden Garcia, Beau and Dannicca Martinez, Keyonna Moore and Nathaniel Sandoval, Lucas Mascareñas, Tocayo Andres Acosta and Angelique Romero; sister, Vitalia (Vita) Moya; sisters-in-law, Florinda Salazar, Seferina Martinez and Aurelia Vigil and husband Jose Ramon; brother-in-law, Antonio “Tony” Martinez; 2 lifelong friends, David Gallegos of El Rancho and Ernesto Marquez of Ranchitos and numerous other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. A rosary will be recited on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Burial to follow at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Santa Cruz, with the following serving the family as pallbearers Michael Valdez, Jr., Jesse Lewis, Tim, John and Albert Martinez and Anthony Moya. Honorary pallbearers will be the rest of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family of Andres “Andy” Avelino Salazar has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
