Alfredo (Freddie) R. DeVargas, 66, a lifelong resident of Española, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 25, 2015 following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio “Tony” and Louise DeVargas; brother, Luis Vargas and nephew, Antonio F. DeVargas. Alfredo “Freddie” was second to the eldest of 11 children, born and raised in the Española Valley. He attended school in the Española Valley school district, but graduated from the El Rito Vocational College. Freddie later attended college in Trinidad, CO where he studied Law Enforcement. In the late 60’s he worked security at the Boys school in Springer. Later he became a Police Officer for the city of Springer. He moved back to Española in the early 70’s after a short residency in California. He was a Police Officer for the City of Española where he was awarded Officer of the year for multiple heroic efforts. In the 80’s, Freddie did part-time work in the Private Investigations arena. Freddie lived out the remainder of his years quietly in disability retirement. He loved music, both listening to it and playing guitar. He also enjoyed dancing, fishing and the casinos. Mr. DeVargas is survived by his companion and friend, Orlinda Martinez; children, Crystal Dawn DeVargas of Tacoma, WA, Marshall DeVargas and wife Kristina of Leadville, CO, Anita Lopez and husband Steve of Alcalde and Rudy DeVargas of Santa Fe; brothers, Antonio “Ike” DeVargas of Servietta, Johnny DeVargas of Española, Gerald DeVargas of Denver, CO, Phillip DeVargas and wife Bertha of Ojo Caliente and Tim DeVargas of Nambe; sisters, Shirley Lujan and husband Gene of Española, Margie Martinez and husband Fred of Española, Elaine Rice of Española, Lorraine Vigil and husband Fidel of Velarde and Pam Quihuis of Española; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Española. Burial to follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Adam Lujan, Cristobal Quihuis, Martin Vigil, Michael and Joshua DeVargas, Brian Manzanares, Jonathan DeVargas and Fred Martinez. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family of Alfredo (Freddie) R.
