Alfredo Anastacio Montoya, 41, of Espanola, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, after of an extended illness. He was born on December 8, 1984, in Espanola, New Mexico.
Alfredo’s community service began while still in school in 4H serving as state treasurer and as a member of the Rio Arriba County fair board. By the time he graduated from Espanola Valley High School he had earned certification as an EMT. While serving as an EMT he earned fire fighter certifications and became a fireman. He eventually became Fire Chief at the Agua Sana Volunteer Fire Department in Hernandez. He served in that role for about a decade where he was recognized for his generous contributions to the community. That was followed by his appointment as Rio Arriba County Fire Marshall where he was credited with establishing a search and rescue team, a swift water rescue team, and implementing an emergency operations center during the covid epidemic. His final position was as Recovery Specialist with New Mexico Homeland Security.
He was known for his outgoing personality and ability to make friends wherever he went and lived life committed to community service.
He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Alfredo and Fay Montoya and James and Radie Mullins.
He is survived by his parents Robert and Faye Montoya, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifelong friends. He will be very much missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.
Rosary will be held at San Juan Bautista Catholic Church at Ohkay Owingeh, NM, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at 7:00 PM.
Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 11 AM at San Juan de Bautista Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh, NM. Burial will follow at Alcalde.
