Tony Borrego

d. October 22, 2017

TONY M. BORREGO, 86, a resident of White Rock, passed away In Los Alamos on Sunday, October 22, 2017 with his family by his side. He was born on January 25, 1931 in Española to Luis and Erinea Garcia Borrego. He was raised in the Española Valley and attended and graduated from Española High School Hornets being Class Valedictorian in 1950. Tony loved to learn, especially numbers, westerns as well as history, especially of New Mexico and the Southwest. He was a voracious reader, with westerns being some of his favorites. After his world became dark, he enjoyed his books on tape. He was also a gun and knife collector, enjoying their history and origin. He went on to graduate at the top of his class at St Michael's College (later College of Santa Fe), in Santa Fe. He was always thirsting for knowledge on so many different levels from accounting, tax laws, his family genealogy to vegetable and flower gardening. He met and married the love of his life, Jessie Curle on November 21, 1959 at Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz. Tony held a Third-Degree Membership with the Los Alamos Order 3137 Knights of Columbus being active until his health would not allow him to continue. He and his family were lifelong members of Immaculate Heart of Mary as well as St. Joseph's Catholic Church’s both In Los Alamos and White Rock. He moved his young family to Los Alamos in 1963 and in 1967 to White Rock, where he remained until his passing. Tony held his position of Account/Business Manager with The Los Alamos School system in high esteem prior to his retirement in 1991 after 34 years of dedication to his career. He took great pride in his work ethic and accomplishments. He was a member as well as donated his time to The Los Alamos Historical Society. He also lent his time and accounting efforts to the Knights of Columbus and Los Alamos YMCA. He was also a board member for Los Alamos Schools Credit Union being one of their first members. He always felt proud of this small Credit Union. Jessie fell ill nine years into their union and Tony gently and lovingly took care of her every need for the rest of her life. This, in part, made them an exceptionally tight knit couple who together raised their four sons to be honest, kind and caring gentleman. As dedicated as Tony was to his church and career, he found his greatest joy and happiness was being surrounded by his wife and their family. Tony was preceded in death by his parents; his only sibling, Teresina Borrego; his wife, Jessie and his newborn son. He is survived by his sons, Louis (Josette) Borrego of Guachupangue, James Borrego and Daniel Borrego of White Rock, and John Borrego of Highland Park, CO; His grandsons, Isaac Borrego of White Rock and Jared Borrego of Flagstaff, AZ, were the pride and joy of both he and Jessie's lives. He is also survived by many cousins, colleagues and friends. Public visitation will begin on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Friday, October 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos.
