SABINO SAMUEL “S.S.” VIGIL, a lifelong resident of Cundiyo, passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2017 after having lived an active and rewarding life for 94 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Esquipula & Francisquita Vigil; brother, Dimas Vigil & wife Dulcinea; brother-in-law, Juan Trujillo; father and mother-in-law, Eugenio & Sarita Trujillo; sister-in-law, Sabinita Martinez & husband Gerbacio Martinez and God-son, Billy Martinez.

Mr. Vigil proudly served his country during World War II and participated in the First Wave Normandy Invasion, Omaha Beach. After the war, he returned to Cundiyo, where he married his wife and provided a strong foundation for his family. He worked for the New Mexico Highway Department for 31 years. Upon retiring, he devoted the next 35 years to tending to his cattle, garden, his rancho, weaving for the Ortega’s weaving shop, and operating a small convenience store and gas station in Cundiyo.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Andreita Vigil; daughters, Yolanda Vigil & husband Tomas of Chimayo, and Ginnie Romero and husband Antonio of Cordova; grandchildren, Mario (raised like a son) and wife Tracy, Crestina, Elias, and Diego Vigil, and Angela Romero and Jake; great-granddaughters, Kaelyn & Layla Mueller. He is also survived by sisters, Tonie Trujillo and Floraida Vigil and brother, Abel and wife Mary Vigil, brother-in-law, Gilbert Trujillo and wife Tillie; God-children, Dolores Arreola, Beverly Vigil, Susan Pacheco, Mario Vigil and numerous other nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be recited on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. also at the Holy Family Catholic Church with the burial to follow at the Cundiyo Cemetery. Serving the family as pallbearers will be, Antonio Romero, Tomas, Mario, Elias, Diego & Severo Vigil.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pojoaque Valley School District Foundation, 1574 State Road 502, Santa Fe, NM 87506.
The family of Sabino Samuel “S.S.” Vigil has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
