Marian Honsinger

d. July 15, 2016

Marian Alice (McKeirnan) Honsinger, Age (76), of Los Alamos, New Mexico, passed away peacefully while surrounded by loving family on July 15, 2016 after a short battle with septicemia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Isabel (Graham) McKeirnan, and her siblings Patricia, Bob, Jean and Mike.   Marian was born in Pomeroy, Washington on August 13, 1939 to Lester and Isabel (Graham) McKeirnan.  On June 11, 1960 she married Richard Honsinger, a loving relationship that lasted for more than five decades.  She graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies in 1961.
Marian and Dick left their home state of Washington and moved with their five children to Los Alamos in 1969.  She fell in love with the Southwest and lived there the remainder of her life.  Over the years, Marian was extremely involved in her community.  She was elected to both the Los Alamos School and UNM-LA Boards where she served for six years.  She was a devout parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, where she served on the Parish Council and Financial Board.  She was a strong supporter of Los Alamos middle school and high school sports for many decades, and was often seen in the stands cheering for her children, her grandchildren, and friends’ and neighbors’ children and grandchildren.
Marian loved her family dearly, and they benefitted greatly from the gifts she passed to them: the value of strong and close family connections as the family aged and grew in size; perseverance and toughness in the face of difficult obstacles; fierce independence to build character and self-reliance; an interested listening ear and no-nonsense advice when needed; and above all, a genuine generous love for her brothers and sisters worldwide.
Marian had a tremendous depth of knowledge and activities.  She was a voracious reader, a superb bridge player, a lover of flowers, an astute observer of politics, a great football fan, an accomplished world traveler, and was very proud of her Irish heritage.
Marian is survived by her husband, Richard of 56 years; her children, Charles (Lee) of Boise ID, Joyce (Mike) Richins of Los Alamos NM, Rick (Linda) of Williams AZ, Patrick (Janet) of Ashland OR, and Kerry of Durango CO, along with 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; her adopted daughter, Denise Trujillo along with the Margaret and Dennis Trujillo family of Hernandez, NM; and her siblings, Grace of Spokane WA, Lois of Seattle WA, Lee of Spokane WA and Jim of Pomeroy WA.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos with a eulogy and rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. also at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos with reception to follow funeral mass. Burial to follow after reception at Guaje Pines in Los Alamos. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to the American Red Cross. The family of Marian Alice (McKeirnan) Honsinger has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
