Benny A. Maestas, age 59, a life-long resident of Santa Cruz, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 6th, 2017. Benny had a love for all of his children that could never be matched. His children meant the world to him. He was an extremely kind, humble and hardworking human being that made everyone his friend. Benny was known for his love of country and was especially proud and recognized for his dedicated service as a United States Marine. He was a well known proprietor of the family business, Vic’s Bar in Santa Cruz. Benny was recently retired after 30 years of service as a lineman and telephone technician serving Northern New Mexico, specifically the areas of Pojoaque and Santa Fe. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, water skiing, and riding his Harley. He is preceded in death by his father Fabian Ben Maestas, niece Rachel Nicole Maestas, Aunt Eliza Garcia and Uncle Pete Lucero. He is survived by his children: Melanie Marie Sandoval and husband Jeremy of Chili, Ben A. Maestas of Albuquerque, Bonnie Mae Maestas of Santa Fe, Marco Antonio Maestas of Santa Cruz, and Delilah Isabella Maestas of Santa Cruz; grandchildren: Brandon Mark Sandoval, Sean Aaron Sandoval, and Marissa Rosella Sandoval; mother Josephine L. Maestas of Santa Cruz; siblings: Christine C. Naranjo of Santa Cruz, Cecilia M. Martinez and husband Larry of Ranchitos, Carla Y. Maestas of Albuquerque, Joseph M. Maestas and Martha Vazquez of Santa Fe, Cathy D. Salazar and husband Gene of Arroyo Seco; he is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many many friends. A rosary is scheduled at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. A Christian funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 10th, 2017 at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada with burial to follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30 pm. Serving as pall bearers: Brandon Sandoval, Sean Sandoval, Patrick Naranjo, Elias Salazar, Joseph F. Maestas and Pedro Lucero. Serving as honorary pall bearers: Marissa Sandoval, Olivia Martinez, Cara Salazar, Gregory Naranjo, Corey Berrigan and James Berrigan. The family of Benny A. Maestas has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
