Jose Otoniel, affectionately known as “Otto”, Herrera, 72, a life-long resident of Nambe, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, November 23, 2018. Otto was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian Herrera and Natividad Herrera Drisdale; uncle, Jose Sandoval; aunt, Eliodora “Lola” Sandoval Gonzales, and nephew, Rick Romero.
Otto was drafted into the Army and served our country in the Vietnam War. Upon an Honorable Discharge, he returned to Nambe where he lived and worked for all of his adult life. He was well known for his love of dogs and horses, the outdoors, and for having an eye for creating natural landscaping. It brought him joy to share simple gifts with friends, family, and even those he had met for the first time.
Otto is survived by one brother and five sisters, Medardo “Marty” Herrera (Sylvia) of La Villita, Beatrice Basquez of Sacramento CA, Lorenza Romero (Frank) of Nambe, Louise Drisdale of Pojoaque, Carmela Drisdale (Adrian) of Foothill Ranch, California, and Verge Drisdale (Dan) of Albuquerque. He is also survived by three daughters, seven grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to extend our sincerest gratitude to the compassionate nurses and caretakers at the VA Hospital, and the exceptional staff, nurses, and caretakers at The Retreat in Rio Rancho for the incredible quality of care they provided.
Public visitation will begin on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nambe (8 Summer Road) with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Burial will take place Friday, November 30, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. with military presence at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are, Angelo Martinez, Mbarak Hussein, Dan Frey, Nick Herrera, Pete Valdez, and Edward Valdez. Honorary pallbearers are, Frank Romero, Adrian Sanchez, and Peter Roybal. The family of Jose Otoniel Herrera has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
