Obituary

Cipriano (Cippy) Joe Martinez Jr. passed away suddenly at his home in Los Luceros, New Mexico on Friday, November 22, 2019. Cippy was born on May 18, 1960 to Cipriano and Charlotte Martinez.

Cippy was a proud McCurdy High School Bobcat who graduated in 1978 and went on to study at Highlands University. He played softball for many years and excelled at the pitching position. He developed lifelong friendships on the diamond field and shared many stories with his family about his softball days. Cippy was also an avid hunter and fisherman who was able to fulfill a lifelong dream to fish the great lakes of Alaska. He was always looking forward to elk season and was usually very successful.  Cippy had a great love for farming and most recently produced a fresh crop of chicos, which he sold and shared with family. He was fortunate enough to have produced an abundant harvest in his last farming season. He had many happy moments over the spring and summer using his new tractor to till the soil in order to prepare and maintain the land. Irrigating his corn field brought him many peaceful moments of reflection. Cippy was quick-witted and brought laughter to friends and family as he used facial expressions to convey his comedic point. We were fortunate to have enjoyed a family dinner a few days before his death, as we celebrated his parents 68th wedding anniversary. Cippy was in classic form as he brought smiles to everyone’s faces with his unique and special stories. He truly enjoyed family dinners, especially if he could poke at the preparations before they were served. Cippy was a passionate person who brought much pride and joy to his family, especially to his parents, who he loved, protected and cared for dearly till his last day.

Cippy is survived by his parents, Cipriano and Charlotte Martinez; his sisters Elizabeth Romero and departed brother-in-law Eddie, Marie Atencio and husband Julian. He was “Uncle Cippy” to several nieces and nephews who loved him dearly, Eddie and Stephanie Romero, Steven and Cassandra Romero, Nick and Lucretia Diaz, Nicholas and Jeannette Atencio, Victoria Atencio and several other great-nieces and great-nephews. Cippy was very fortunate to have been loved and guided in life by several aunts, uncles and cousins and special friends, Geraldine Shaw and Eddie Velarde.  A rosary will be recited on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh, with a Mass of Christian burial to follow at 1:30 p.m.. Burial will be held at La Villita Cemetery, with the following serving the family as pallbearers, Steven Romero, and Nick Diaz who were like the sons he never had, and Aurther Cordova, Manuel Bustos, Sandy Medina and Marty Lopez. The family of Cipriano Cippy Joe Martinez has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477-www.devargasfuneral.com
