Napoleon Garcia

d. August 14, 2016

NAPOLEON GARCIA, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2016 in his home in Abiquiu surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leopoldo Garcia and Lucia Suazo; wife Emma; brothers, Arturo and Nelson Suazo; granddaughter, Shanice and grandson, Julian. Napoleon was born April 25, 1931 in Santa Fe. Soon after his birth his parents returned to Abiquiu. Napoleon lived most of his life on the plaza, in the heart of the village, where he raised his ten children. He enjoyed celebrating the fiestas in his village and was a Matachine dancer in his youth. He retired after working 35 years as a laborer for the Los Alamos National Lab. He created a lively tourist information business on the porch of his home where he delighted tourists with village stories and displayed his woodworking craft. Napoleon was fiercely devoted to his family. He had a generous heart and would literally give you the shirt of his back, the food off his plate or his last dollar in his wallet. After retirement he felt blessed to participate with a missionary group working in Nicaragua building homes and churches for the poor. He was proud of his Genizaro heritage and loved to share his history and tell stories of his village. He spent many years volunteering at El Rancho de Las Golondrinas, a Spanish Colonial living history museum south of Santa Fe. Napoleon is survived by his wife, Analinda; siblings, Jacobo Suazo and Sylvia Consadon; his ten children, Garciola, Leopoldo, Aaron Howard, Theodoro, Antonio, Napoleon, Dennis, Dominic, Rebecca and Marie; 24 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren. He was much loved and will be greatly missed. Public visitation will begin on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiu, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. also at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiu.
