Nancy Bearss

d. September 22, 2017

Nancy C. Bearss, 73, a resident of Los Alamos for 51 years, passed away September 22, 2017, from a year-long courageous battle with lymphoma cancer.

Nancy was born April 27, 1944 in Boone Grove, Indiana, and graduated from Ball State University in 1966. She taught physical education for 29 years at Pueblo Junior High and the Los Alamos Middle School. In the 1970’s, Nancy worked bravely and diligently to institute Title IX for the benefit of many young women in Los Alamos.

Nancy maintained a wonderful attitude throughout her illness and continued to be intellectually curious and concerned about her friends and family. Her opinions and her legendary sense of humor remained intact. One day she said she would like to take her medication “with a big bucket of pirate’s brew”.

Nancy is survived by her partner of 36 years, Annette Fox, her dear friend Linda Cooper of Albuquerque, her sister Anita Buibish of Valparaiso, Indiana, her sister Jan Bowen of Leesburg, Florida, her nephew David Buibish of Churubusco, Indiana, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Nancy was loved by many students, who were inspired by her strength and dedication, and who have maintained contact with her over the years. Nancy came to teach in Los Alamos for only 1 year, but loved Los Alamos and its people so much, that she stayed for 51 years.

Nancy wants to thank all of her friends, family and medical personnel. She appreciates their time, generous visits, cards, calls, meals, love and support.
