Jane Gerheart (June 28, 1940), a longtime resident of Los Alamos, passed away on April 18, 2017 after battling pancreatic cancer for nine months. She is survived by Don her husband of over 52 years, a daughter Ann and son Chuck and daughter-in-law Chris. She also leaves behind a sister Nancy Chase from Laramie, WY and husband Jim, two nephews David Chase and wife Toni (Casper, WY), Dan Chase and son Ty (Phoenix, AZ) and niece, Jane Hewitt and son James (Ft. Collins, CO). She was preceded in death by her parents Chuck and Ruth Seltenrich.

Jane received her Bachelor of Music Educator Degree from the University of Wyoming in 1963. Following her graduation she taught elementary music for a semester with the Rawlins Wyoming School District. In the fall of 1964 she and her husband were hired to teach the entire music program in the Green River Wyoming Public Schools. Jane taught elementary music and junior high chorus. In the fall of 1966 Don was offered a band position with the Los Alamos Public Schools. Jane was a stay at home mom for years teaching oboe lessons to young students. In 1986 Jane was hired by the Los Alamos Public Schools to teach elementary band. In 1988 she began teaching band at Los Alamos Middle School. In 2003 she took her middle school band to the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) State Band Contest and her band were named the state champions in the middle school classification. She retired in 2004 but was asked to serve as the band director for the Los Alamos Middle School bands in 2005 as the person who was hired resigned after only six weeks on the job. Once again her middle school concert band qualified the NMAA State Band Contest and the band was awarded the first place trophy in the middle school classification.

Jane loved to play the oboe and she did so with several Los Alamos music organizations. She was a member of the Los Alamos Symphony for 49 years and served as a member of their Board of Directors and was their President for two terms. She also was a member of the orchestra for the Los Alamos Choral Society concerts and numerous Light Opera shows.

Jane was a member of the National Association for Music Education, the New Mexico Music Educators Association (NMMEA) and Phi Beta Mu. She helped with many of the preparations for NMMEA’s annual All-State Music Festival and In-Service Conference and helped each April with the New Mexico Activities Association’s All-State Orchestra, Choir, and Band State Contests.

Jane’s Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 3:30 PM at Crossroads Bible Church 97 East Road Los Alamos, NM 87544.

The family of Jane Gerheart has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
