Frederic Fairfield

d. October 26, 2017

Frederic Robinson Fairfield, known to his friends and family as Eric, passed away on Thursday, October 26th, 2017 in his Los Alamos home at the age of 70. Eric was born in 1947 to Ruth Robinson and Edwin Eaton Fairfield of Orange, New Jersey. He attended the Pingry School in New Jersey before studying chemistry and math at Lehigh University. He earned his PhD in biochemistry in 1980 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. After pursuing his postdoctoral research in Eugene, Oregon, where his daughter Jessamyn was born, he moved to Knoxville, Tennessee as a university professor. He came to Los Alamos in 1989, to work on the Human Genome Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory. After leaving the lab, he developed his own projects in areas as diverse as microarrays, bioinformatics, and neuroscience. He loved discussing science with people of all backgrounds, and was very active in the local Faith and Science group. He also enjoyed cooking, gardening, photography, and listening to any and every type of music. He had perfected the art of a good joke. And most of all Eric loved people, seeking out interesting conversations and new perspectives all the time. Eric was preceded in death by his two brothers, Ted and David. He is survived by his daughter Jessamyn, of Galway Ireland, his nephew Edwin, of Albuquerque, many cousins across the country, and his aunt Patricia Robinson of Bailey Island, Maine. A memorial service will be held for Eric at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Friday, November 3rd at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society. The family of Frederic Robinson Fairfield has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
